It’s A'll That and None of It

This exhibit is the tangible result of my personal journey of self-exploration as a Black person in America. My disjointed and non-linear quest to better understand the past, present, and future of my people proved to be both frustrating and fulfilling. My initial goal was to create visual depictions of my definition of the Black experience. I repeatedly asked myself the same question. What exactly is the Black experience? Out of that one question came many more. What makes us who we are?  Is it our culture?  Is it our history? Is it our triumphs? Is it our struggles?  The answer to each question was a definite yes and no. I began to realize that the ever-evolving nature of the Black community defies definition. It was at this point that I decided that the Black experience in America can most accurately be summed up in one phrase: It’s all that and none of it. This exhibit celebrates the complex beauty of a people whose experience in this country is fluid and ever-changing.
